    CO-MIDA

    A co-designed green urban living system for local energy and food production 3d printed with clay

    Spain
    CO-MIDA model uses the urban space to produce food and energy while restoring at the same time the ecosystem and biodiversity of its environment, thus reducing greenhouse gases and optimising air quality. It is co-designed by the citizens to address their needs and it uses 3d printing technologies which permit its adaptation to multiple environmental and urban conditions. Following its bottom approach CO-MIDA has been physically implemented as a vertical garden in two areas of Barcelona.

    The Youth Leaders for Sustainability was a creative 12-months project bringing together 200 young active citizens across the EU to share learning and build networks, through cascaded training on specific methodology which culminated to climate action-led initiatives. Through challenge funds for young people we supported 29 environmental and social action projects proposed and implemented by youth in Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland/Northern Ireland and Poland.

    Regeneration of beach dune systems

    The beaches in and around Barcelona are part of a densely populated area under heavy pressure due to its high logistic, urban and touristic value. Most coastal ecosystems have disappeared. This project aims to protect and regenerate beach-dunes through a series of actions encouraging public participation, thus raising awareness about the environmental importance of dunes. It is also attached to improving infrastructure and access to the beaches, so all can keep enjoying these valuable natural sites.

    Educan is an educational multi-species architecture where dogs, humans and other species coexist and learn together, and where non-humans are at the centre of the design.  Sitting in amongst fields, in a rural environment transformed over recent decades, Educan school is trialling ways to recover the conditions of the ecosystem. Educan is also an experiment that demonstrates that agricultural architectures can also be places of exploration, innovation, circularity, sustainability and beauty.

    How about a parliament for the river ? This is the unifying idea behind the Loire parliament approach. For the past 3 years, POLAU organized hearings (led by Camille de Toledo, writer), public events, arts&sciences residencies to imagine a fictitious institution representing both humans and non-humans. This pioneer initiative involves a large community to the river’s stakes, to a legal status for elements of nature. It participates in turning around methods of territorial engineering.

    A new green residential area is being developed on the site of the former hospital "De Lichtenberg" in the Dutch city of Amersfoort. The area has a rich culture and is characterized by - for Dutch standards - very sloped terrains which were created during the ice age. House Lichtenberg overlooks the whole historic city whilst being next to the rural forests of the Veluwe. An authentic environment to create a unique nature-oriented home on the border of this urban and rural area.

    Rural Commons Festival

    The Rural Commons Festival explored the open concept of rural commons through the format of an itinerant festival. The festival was co-designed and co-led by multiple community-based stakeholders in three alpine valleys. Over three week-ends, with over 30 different activities the festival explored a long tradition of practices of collective care for rural habitats. It invited to care for historical and emerging commons as a way to locally and collaboratively deal with global challenges.

    Beaver center

    Beaver Center / Bobrov center – (Nature Conservation Center Sotla / Naravovarstveni center Sotla)

    Beaver Center is an ecological-educational-tourist station for observation and presentation of nature along Sotla river. It is built on the edge of the parched lake depression and partly levitates over the slope. This wooden-container-pavilion, with community spaces and with a central viewing staircase, has an info-point with a snack bar, a study, a gallery and a lecture hall. Construction is wooden. Larch facade interprets vernacular architecture and relates to cultural and natural environment.
