DNBW design collective is providing spatial and aesthetic support for short-film festival Lago Film Fest. The event takes place in the beautiful natural location of Revine Lago, spread in a lakeside park where screens are located. As of now, there is not a coordinated set up image beyond graphic material, and the masterplan layout is fragmentary. The organization of the festival also hosts artistic residencies and a varied cultural program that will also benefit from the architectural project.
Our main objectives as designers are:
- to give a comprehensive recognizable image to the staging, an overall aesthetic identity
- to valorize the landscape
- to allow and stimulate new uses of the space
- to provide a masterplan that can be progressively implemented in the following edition
- to use a technology that is easy to mount, reusable and inexpensive
In the project we are using metal tubes to create ephemeral structures in the park, recollecting the style of a movie set. The imagery of movie production and fruition is also used to imagine spaces and elements. These objects frame the landscape, enclose spaces, hide views, and stand visible to signal the presence of their function throughout the festival space. The masterplan is made of part thought following functional priorities and spread over the following years so that it can be incremented without changing language and technology. This edition, the new Foyer will allow visitors to enjoy the lake-side park during the day as well as functioning as a luminescent sign and gathering spot in the projection nights.

The whole project is to be made with construction metal tubes. This is a technology that allows:
- the structure to be assembled and disassembled easily and without any waste (differently than custom wood, for instance)
- it can be easily stored in the the local facility
- it is locally available and already very common
- it can be rented / borrowed, so that the material can return to its standard use afterwards
- there are lots of possibility for sponsorship, fostering new partnerships

The whole projects uses metal construction tubes. These are chosen, among other reasons, for their aesthetic look in contrast with the natural landscape and the wooden made forniture of the park. This will allow for the festival to stand out and be visible as something "other" and temporary, that will be remembered. At the same time, being a thin frame, it is a rather "light" impact on the landscape. Resembling the concept of the set, it is supposed to host curtains, signs, lights, and eventually seats and surfaces, allowing different use and spatial possibilities that will be also modified later on.
Please highlight how the concept/idea can be exemplary in this context
The project is the spatial support for a movie festival that already its own public program, so the public vocation is at the core. The Festival has an essential role in the local rural community and has developed over 17 years. As a matter of fact, the structure will work to consolidate the audience of the event and to make the experience more remarkable also for local inhabitants.
Please highlight how this approach can be exemplary
The concept evolves from the idea of bringing the world of cinema to Lago, to play with that experience. The visitor must remember, in addition to the movies, the experience of being there. The idea of a set plays with scenarios with ambiguity so that at some point the landscape and its life become the scene to be watched, sometimes the visitors are. Sometimes the place is a cinema, others a park. The set uses the strong aesthetic feeling of metal tubes, that express their own impermanence. At the same time, this technology allows for short transport and local supply, no waste and easy storage. The objective of the design is to be of light impact, recognizable, and to foster new partnerships in the local economy.
Our approach was to develop a set of possibilities, an imagery to draw concepts from, combined with the most accessible, sustainable and easy technology. That is where the idea of the movie-set is coming from, coherently with the movie festival vocation. We wanted our design to be rather low tech, durable, progressively implementable, re-assembled in different ways (modular). We wanted it to be a support, so that the graphics, curtains and other elements, could be updated each year without loosing the overall experience.
The design will obviously gain specificity and once approved by the festival management we will look for material supply in the area in order to build it in the summer 2022. The structure will serve for two weeks and the built again the next year together with its developments as specified elsewhere.
The masterplan idea is progressive, so the project will be developed following the same line of style and technology. Structures will eventually increase in complexity and scale in order to unlock new possibilities for the movie festival and artistic program.
