Picture books on sustainable building solutions for kids & adults
Description

To raise awareness about sustainable building solutions, beyond the building industry, is the key to tackling existing and future challenges. Change within the building industry can only progress when a wider audience is approached. A series of picture books and playful educational games, will take upon the challenge to transform complex information into easy-to-understand illustrations. Targeted at our little ones these books will inspire and open the eyes of grown ups and children alike.

II. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
Please provide a summary of your concept/ idea

My idea is based around my research from my Master's thesis ("A different spin on insulation - illustrated ideas on sustainable retrofitting in New Zealand") two years ago. Conversations across the building sector, but also speaking about my work with ordinary people, made me realise, that there are large gaps in education about zero carbon building practices, building materials and how to operate buildings sustainable. When I combined my background in architecture with my job as an illustrator, it became obvious that illustrated books can be a powerful tool to educate people. The research on existing children books has shown that there are countless books on climate change that talk about recycling, saving water or public transport. While none of them are addressing topics around sustainable architecture, and how our cities and houses have a large potential to reduce global warming. This was my call. To start creating a series of picture books that talk about the opportunities we have in the building sector, using simple words and illustrations, making complex topics easily understandable for children and Adults.

Please indicate the main themes of your concept/idea with 5 key words
Education
Embodied Carbon
Operational Carbon
Net Zero Carbon Houses
Circular Economy
Please give information about the key objectives of your concept/idea in terms of environmental sustainability (including circularity) and how these would be met.
Please highlight how the concept/idea can be exemplary in this context

The first step towards change is always acknowledgement. Without the background knowledge no-one can make informed decisions concerning sustainability in any sector. This is why I believe that we have to educate people outside the building industry, to make it possible for them to judge which materials they want to choose, where to build their house or what type of heating they want to install. A key topic of the books will be also to explain the term embodied carbon and understanding how certain materials can go back into a cycle and others are determined to go to landfill. Furthermore, they will give an understanding of the environmental impact materials have. It will explore the idea of re-using parts of a building, or that renovating releases far less carbon than a new build project.

Please give information about the key objectives of your concept/idea in terms of aesthetics and quality of experience beyond functionality and how these would be met.
Please highlight how the concept/idea can be exemplary in this context

The books will be hand illustrated and produced on environmental friendly paper. My aim is to create not only educational material on technical facts but to teach kids the basics of aesthetics with layout, fonts, graphics and colour palettes. Some books will have textures for children to touch e.g. learning about building materials. Some books will have educational games to compliment the content and will encourage children (and adults) to get creative, build and experiment. The books and games will be a great present as well as a helpful tool for teachers and educators all around the world. It will set an example for other publishers; to focus on the topic of sustainable zero carbon built environment, and initiate a new era of children education.

Please give information about the key objectives of your concept/idea in terms of inclusion (equal opportunities, public participation, citizen engagement, co-design, universal design, accessibility, affordability, etc.) and how these would be met.
Please highlight how the concept/idea can be exemplary in this context

The books will go hand in hand with an educational platform that will create an environment for everyone to share, discuss and learn. There will be information to download, events online and offline, opportunities to meet up and we can have people participate in polls, looking what they are interested in most and seeing how different challenges are in different countries all over the world. We can get the best out of every country and combine it to a best building practice we educate on.

Please explain how these three dimensions would be combined in your concept/idea.
Please highlight how this approach can be exemplary

With my books we could be spreading information about sustainability in a very aesthetic way through illustration and words (books would be  translated in many languages). In combination with the platform we could get knowledge to everyone in the world and give everyone the opportunity to make their own decisions and take action for a zero carbon future.

Please highlight the innovative character of the concept/idea as compared to mainstream practices in the field of the concept/idea.

From my personal research I have discovered a large gap in education / children's education on the topic of sustainable architecture. My books would be an example for writers, illustrators and publishers around the world.

Please detail the general plans that you have for the further development, promotion and/or implementation of your concept/idea.

I'm currently working on the first book of a series which focusses on the carbon footprint of both humans and buildings. This is basic information everyone must get familiar with, before looking into other topics, such as embodied carbon in building materials, the re-use of buildings (or parts of buildings), shared community spaces and the capacity to produce energy on site. With this first edition, I will search for a publisher who is interested in sustainable children books, and is motivated to introduce a completely new topic into the the market of children's books. This publisher will need to agree on publishing a whole series of books. My goal is to publish all the books in several languages and make it available in print and digital form, so everyone around the world has access to it. During this process I'm planning on gathering a small team that can help to promote the book across the world, both online and offline. Included in this are educational games and small animations that explain technical terms in a simple manner, ultimately this should challenge the potential of the building industry and focus on how we can create a circular economy with building materials. When the book is published there will be workshops and promotions in and around schools, libraries and sustainability events.

Imagine that your idea/concept is awarded in the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2022. What kind of initiatives would you take throughout the following year (June 2022- June 2023)

Winning the New European Bauhaus Prize would give me the opportunity to fully focus on finishing and publishing the first book in the next year. I would create an online platform to build an audience and where I can share information and connect with people especially in the period before the book is available for sale. It would also be a great opportunity to reach out and work together with the community e.g. find out what they are interested to learn most for the upcoming books and educational games. When the book is out I would get the medias attention and promote the book on a large scale e.g. TV, Radio, social media and events.
